A00057 - The Hajj and the Hijra

Last night, DW news reported on the rebirth of the global hajj

This was confirmed by subsequent news print reports

I suppose most Americans pay little attention to this annual gathering.  However, for almost 1.5 billion people it is one of the great ambitions of life to perform the hajj and the spiritual transformations that occur during the hajj have literally transformed the world.

For me, this hajj is especially significant because the "rebirth" of the global hajj has happened to coincide with the 1400 year (by the Christian calendars) anniversary of the hijra -- the migration of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers from a hostile Mecca to and accepting Medina.

I suppose most Americans do not know about the hijra either.

There is an old saying that "You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.."  Sadly, I fear that if the horse -- if humanity -- does not drink from the water (the knowledge) of the many faiths, the horse will not thrive.

But that is only my perspective.

Have an enlightened hajj, have a spirit filled hijra.

Salaam,
