A00062 - Bill Russell, High Jumper


Many have already fondly recalled their memories of Bill Russell, the Boston Celtics legend who was the greatest basketball player of all time.


I call Russell the greatest of all time not just because he won almost twice as many championships (11 to 6)  as the currently acknowledged GOAT, Michael Jordan.  He also won twice as many NCAA championships and most impressively of all as a world class high jumper Bill Russell arguably exceeded Michael's iconic feat of jumping from the free throw line to dunk at a NBA All-Star Dunking Contest.  In Bill Russell's famous basket, he leads a fast break, takes off from the free throw line, leaps over a defender, and scores the basket.  Even the amazing Michael never did that.

The Bay Area clearly mourns one of its favorite sons and, as a fellow high jumper with far less leap, I mourn him as well.

A00143 - Hot off the press: Manhattan Beach apologizes!

I received an email a few moments ago from my Amherst College classmate, Peter Alfvin, who is a resident of Manhattan Beach ... and who has been keeping me informed of the City discussions concerning the return of the Bruce Beach property to my Bruce Family relatives and the compensation paid along with the protracted process of the Bruce Family receiving an apology for what was done to the family one hundred years ago.  Peter's email title says it all and the attached newspaper article says it all.   At long last, the City of Manhattan Beach has apologized to the Bruce Family.  Now, finally, ... maybe ... the reconciliation can begin. Peter, lunch is on me when next I come down your way.  We have much to talk about my friend.
