A00307 - After 50 Years Why Haven't We Made More Progress?: The Goaly Trinity

 It is time for the Olympics, and I must admit that I have become a rather sad specimen, being the entrenched couch potato.  I have been watching everything from the badminton finals to the table tennis (ping pong) finals.  I watched the great women's bicycle road race which was amazingly won by an American woman from the cycling Mecca of Homer, Alaska.  And, of course, I could not pass up paying homage to the two G.O.A.T. s, Katie Ledecky and Simone Biles. 


Today, I watched the Women's Soccer game where the US team defeated the German team 1-0 on an overtime goal scored by Sophia Smith.  As I watched the goal being scored, and then watched Sophia Smith being immediately embraced on the ground by her teammate Mallory Swanson, I noticed that the two women looked like sisters with tans to match.  Indeed, in these Olympic Games, the American Women's team has been led by the trio of Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson and Sophia Smith.  Each has scored 3 goals for the team, and each share the same tan.

Trinity Rodman (the daughter of NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman), Mallory Swanson, and Sophia Smith, all share the same tan because they are all the children of black-white relationships, and it is their athletic prowess and team chemistry which has taken the American team to the Gold Medal game.

If there has been progress made over the last 50 years, these black-white relationships may be one of the notable areas of progress.  And if the success being shown by the American team on the soccer fields of France are any indication, the future of America just might be brighter than we think.

A00143 - Hot off the press: Manhattan Beach apologizes!

I received an email a few moments ago from my Amherst College classmate, Peter Alfvin, who is a resident of Manhattan Beach ... and who has been keeping me informed of the City discussions concerning the return of the Bruce Beach property to my Bruce Family relatives and the compensation paid along with the protracted process of the Bruce Family receiving an apology for what was done to the family one hundred years ago.  Peter's email title says it all and the attached newspaper article says it all.   At long last, the City of Manhattan Beach has apologized to the Bruce Family.  Now, finally, ... maybe ... the reconciliation can begin. Peter, lunch is on me when next I come down your way.  We have much to talk about my friend. Sadly, the 75th-year anniversary of the Nakba has predictably proven to be woefully tragic.
