A00322 - Chauncey Baker Larry (Amherst College Class of 1927), Dunbar High School Graduate, Long Time (40 Year) Lincoln Junior High School Math Teacher

 


The next name on my Memorial List is Chauncey Baker Larry, a member of the Amherst College Class of 1927.  Chaunce, as he was called during his Amherst College days, was another graduate of the illustrious Dunbar High School. Perhaps following in the footsteps of the math wizard and Dunbar High School math teacher, Robert Mattingly, Amherst College Class of 1905, Chaunce became a teacher after graduation from Amherst.  He spent 40 of his 42 years as a teacher at Lincoln Junior High School. It appears that he taught math and French during his career.   Chaunce retired from Lincoln Junior High School (presumably the now Lincoln Middle School in Washington, D. C.) in January of 1969.

A slight correction to email set forth below, Charles Richard Drew was not the "next" name on my Memorial List.  The true next name on my Memorial List is Thurman Luce Dodson, another Dunbar High School graduate and an Amherst College classmate of Charles Drew in the Class of 1926.  Dodson comes before Drew because the list is alphabetical within the class listings.

As for Thurman Luce Dodson, I know that he graduated from Amherst College in 1926 where he received the Hyde and Hardy Prizes. He then graduated from Howard University Law School in 1929.  He appears to have been a self-employed attorney in the Washington, D.C. area for his entire 71-year professional career from January 1930 to September 2001 -- an extraordinary length of time.  Aside from his legal longevity, which is quite an accomplishment in and of itself, I was not able to find any other source of information except for a 1975 case involving Mr. Dodson which does not reflect favorably on him.
In time, I hope that additional information can be discovered concerning Thurman Luce Dodson.  If so, it will be added to his profile ... and to my memories of him.

A00143 - Hot off the press: Manhattan Beach apologizes!

I received an email a few moments ago from my Amherst College classmate, Peter Alfvin, who is a resident of Manhattan Beach ... and who has been keeping me informed of the City discussions concerning the return of the Bruce Beach property to my Bruce Family relatives and the compensation paid along with the protracted process of the Bruce Family receiving an apology for what was done to the family one hundred years ago.  Peter's email title says it all and the attached newspaper article says it all.   At long last, the City of Manhattan Beach has apologized to the Bruce Family.  Now, finally, ... maybe ... the reconciliation can begin. Peter, lunch is on me when next I come down your way.  We have much to talk about my friend.
