A00489 - Henry Hart iii, Amherst College Class of 1972, Germantown Friends School (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Graduate, Boston...

Returning to the Memorial List, I go back to the posting for Henry Hart III, Amherst College Class of 1972, and correct some previous statements.  The post should now read:

The next name on the Memorial List after Gregory Allen Domingue, Amherst College Class of 1972, is Henry Hart III, Amherst College Class of 1972.  The half-brother of Allen Hart, Amherst College Class of 1982, Henry was a graduate of the Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  At Amherst, Henry majored in English.

In preparing this post, it was discovered that there was considerable confusion surrounding Henry Hart III because there was another Henry Hart who was a member of the Class of 1972.  After much discussion, clarity was provided by Russell Williams, a fellow member of the Class of 1972.  Russell wrote:

"I remember both Henry Harts in the class of '72.  Henry A, Hart was a member of the track team, but not Henry Hart III.    Henry A Hart had great respect for Henry Hart III, and once joked that Henry Hart III's impressive high school record may have helped him (Henry A. Hart) to be admitted to Amherst because of the possibility of being mistaken for Henry Hart III.  Henry A. Hart had a great career as General Counsel for the Society for Human Resource Management, the association that provides research, advocacy and other services for human resource professionals.  He commented admiringly about Henry Hart III's career when word passed through the 1972 listserve that Henry Hart III had passed.

"I do distinctly remember Henry A. Hart running laps in the cage at Amherst.
BTW, Henry A. Hart wrote to me in early 2015 after I was awarded an endowed Chair at Wheaton.  He found out through his wife, a Wheaton alum, who had received the news through the Wheaton magazine.  It was then that I learned that he was at SHRM.  I wrote back to him, because my youngest brother (who also was a lawyer) had worked at SHRM for part of his career---but their time at SHRM had not overlapped."

With Russell's clarifications, I can now proceed to the remainder of the story. After Amherst, Henry went to Boston University for law school. After graduation from BU, he returned to Philadelphia where he had a long legal career.   Below is the obituary that is set forth in the Alumni Directory.  However, following the Alumni Directory obituary, I found the obituary from the Chestnut Hill Local which I found to be more complete and more expressive of Henry's life.

Peace,

Everett "Skip" Jenkins

Henry Hart III, lawyer

Posted Wednesday, April 29, 2015 10:49 am

Henry Hart III, 64, a lawyer who had held several positions in state government, died April 18 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at his home in West Mt. Airy.

When he retired in 2012 because of his illness, Mr. Hart was attorney-in-charge of the Philadelphia Bureau of Consumer Protection for the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, a position he had held for 10 years.

Earlier he had worked in the Pennsylvania Office of Inspector General, eventually serving as Acting Inspector General, and before that he was chief counsel to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

Born in North Adams, Mass., he was raised in Germantown and was a graduate of Germantown Friends School. He was a graduate of Amherst College and Boston University’s School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Mr. Hart returned to Philadelphia and accepted a position with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, but soon after moved on to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, where he spent nearly two decades as a trial lawyer, teacher and supervisor.

Jeffrey Minehart, one of his chiefs in the District Attorney’s Office who currently is supervising judge of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, Criminal Division, praised Mr. Hart’s skills as a lawyer.

“Henry always had a great perspective on how to approach a criminal case,” Minehart said. “He was extremely bright and never hesitated to give his opinion on how to proceed. He was usually right.”

Gary Tennis, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, said that “sharing a courtroom with Henry Hart in the Major Crimes Unit was a humbling experience.”

”His intelligence, humor and just plain skill were beyond reach,” Tennis said. I couldn’t have asked for a better and kinder mentor.”

Physically active for most of his life, Mr. Hart liked to ride fast bikes, lift weights and drive powerful cars. He also enjoyed traveling with his family on road trips to New England.

He is survived by his wife, the former Sarah Baseden; sons Alex and Rich; daughters Jackie Vandenbraak Pfeiffenberger and Tessa Hart; his mother, Ann Hart; a sister, Elizabeth Hart, and two grandchildren.

A memorial service was held April 25 at Germantown Friends Meeting. Memorial donations may be made to Stratford Friends School, 2 Bishop Hollow Road, Newtown Square, PA 19073, or to the Ellyn Fund, ALS Association, Philadelphia Chapter, 321 Norristown Road, Lower Gwynedd, PA 19002. – WF
