A00053 - June 2022 Must See TV: PBS: Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness

This email serves as a reminder that Hiding in Plain Sight airs tonight.  This film is a personal one for Ken Burns.  As he mentioned in tonight's PBS Newshour, he experienced his own mental illness issues during his youth in association with the long term illness and subsequent death of his mother.  For the edification of all, it would be beneficial to watch "Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness". A00052 - Restitution, Reparations and Reconciliation

June has been a month of some remarkable acts aimed at a form of reconciliation.  Two of the more acts occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the Belgian monarch visited the country and returned some Congolese art https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/09/belgium-king-philippe-democratic-republic-congo-colonialism/ along with the return of the tooth of Patrice Lumumba -- the only part of his body that remains from his brutal murder https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/tooth-patrice-lumumba-congo-independence-returned-familly-belgium-rcna33270 I suspect that we are entering a period when many European nations will have a "reckoning" over the atrocities committed during their colonial periods.  However, we in the United States still have reckonings of our own to endure On a personal note, it appears that progress has been made on the return of Bruce's Beach to some of my distant cousins.   https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-06-23/los-angele

A00051 - NAMI Con 2022 and the Advent of 988

Image
The NAMI Conference began on Tuesday.  I am not able to attend but I am able to peruse the schedule https://events.nami.org/namicon2022/schedule and I am able to ascertain the prominence of the advent of 988 -- the new national mental health hotline number -- is having on the discussion at the conference. https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/988 Here, in California, the advent of 988 holds a great deal of promise ... provided that it can procure sufficient resources.  It is my sincere hope and prayer that it succeeds in doing so. Introduction

To God  Be the Glory Today, Sunday, November 28, 2021, is my birthday.  I am 68 years old today. However, I believe that this day is actually the day I will remember for being the first day of my new life. For those who have ventured on to this site, I invite you to come along on my journey.  It should be an interesting ride. Peace, Everett "Skip" Jenkins Fairfield, California November 28, 2021

2022: About the Author

Over the past 68 years, I have achieved some notable accomplishments.  Below are the links to some of the biographical listings that set forth those accomplishments: https://www.24-7pressrelease.com/press-release/490677/marquis-whos-who-honors-everett-w-jenkins-jr-with-inclusion-in-whos-who-in-the-world https://prabook.com/web/everett.jenkins/1666664 https://marquistoplawyers.com/2018/05/25/everett-jenkins-jr/ https://wwlifetimeachievement.com/2018/01/23/everett-jenkins/ https://www.amherst.edu/alumni/connect/networks/black_alumni/black-alumni-week-2021/speaker-biographies https://www.amherst.edu/alumni/connect/networks/black_alumni/archive/BAW_2019/speaker-biographies/node/738351 I feel very blessed to have been able to do as much as I have, but I feel that I have been "called" to do even more.  The creation of this blog is my response to that "calling".  I look forward to seeing what your response to that "calling" will be. 2022: About God

The main notoriety I have achieved in this life is based upon my writing.  I have written six books ( Pan-African Chronology  [three volumes],  The Muslim Diaspora  [two volumes], and  The Creation  [one volume]) which achieved some notoriety and I have begun two blogs  Who's Who in Islam  and  The Muslim Compendium  which have garnered additional notoriety.  However, whatever notoriety I have achieved for my writing has always seemed a bit undeserved.  Truth be told, I write not for notoriety, but for God.  In the coming days, I hope to be able to elaborate on why I do this.  However, suffice it to say that every book I write and every blog I begin, begins with a tribute to God.  I can only pray that God will continue to find what I write to be an expression of God's will. A00050 - Unborn Child

Last week, in reminiscing about the musical career of Seals and Croft, I happened to read the Wikipedia article about the group https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seals_and_Crofts In the article there is this statement  " The controversial  Unborn Child  followed in 1974. Written shortly after  Roe v. Wade , Seals & Crofts expressed their anti-abortion position in the title song, which created a huge dilemma for radio stations. Some stations banned it while others added it to rotation. The album still went gold despite the controversy and the lack of a Top 40 hit. " In reading more about the album, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unborn_Child and the effect it had on the career of  Seals and Croft https://humanlifereview.com/unborn-child-forty/ I began to reflect on the issue with a bit more focus.  What I found was a problematic issue.  On the one hand reproductive rights has been a generational staple that has received a great deal of support over the last forty years.  http

A00049 - Jim Seals' Diamond Girl

Image
Those who took the trouble to read the New York Times obituary for Jim Seals will have read that his wife Ruby Jean survives her husband.  What you may not be aware of is that Ruby Jean is African American and that she and Jim Seals have been married for 52 years. I first became aware of their marriage in the early 1970s and I thought it was one of the more beautiful love stories of the time.  Some of their story can be found in this Sun news article https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/18816903/jim-seals-wife-ruby-jean/ but another part of their story can be found in the lyrics of the songs that Seals & Croft wrote and sang.  If you listened to Summer Breeze you can see Ruby Jean there and if you listen to this next song you can see Ruby Jean there as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5b65hociXU A Diamond Girl, indeed.   A wave of nostalgia and sadness washed over me today after reading about the passing of Jim Seals https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/07/arts/music/jim-seals-dead.html and recalling so profoundly the memories associated with his signature song from a summer from half a century ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQQbjpomexo Ahhh, time flies .... but thank God some memories do remain. A00047 - NAMI Convention 2022 and June 2022 Must See TV: PBS: Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness

In connection with the ongoing gun violence epidemic that has beset the land, some have wanted to link the gun violence epidemic to the mental illness epidemic that also plagues the land.  Sadly, those who are experts regarding mental illness are skeptical of this connection    https://www.health.com/news/mental-illness-gun-violence Nevertheless, since the issue of the prevalence of mental illness has arisen, if one is truly interested in the issue one may begin to find some answers at the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Convention that will be taking place next week  https://nami.org/Get-Involved/Attend-the-NAMI-National-Convention If it is conducted like last year's convention, you can attend virtually and by doing so you will be granted access to the recorded sessions for the rest of the calendar year.  It may be much to ask, but given the implications of mental illness being the cause of gun violence and homelessness, it should behoove us all to learn more about this

A00045 - Police on Trial and a Trial Solution

This has been a sad week.  Ukraine; Uvalde, Texas;  and Tulsa, Oklahoma, have all contributed to my feeling sad.  But this sadness has been compounded by my reading  the PBS Newshour footnote to its reporting on the Tulsa mass shooting wherein it is noted that every 13 hours a person is killed in Oklahoma by gunfire and by the PBS Frontline program "Police on Trial" which highlights the continuing police problems in Minneapolis which indicates that the policing problem has not been resolved.  Instead the policing situation in Minneapolis may now be worse.  Watching the examples of excessive force being utilized in Minneapolis was very upsetting.  However, the most heinous example of excessive force may have been this: https://nypost.com/2021/10/07/bodycam-video-shows-minneapolis-cops-hunting-protesters/ Once upon a time, I worked for a City where the police use of force resulted in the deaths of a number of black men.  These deaths led to a consent decree which created a Po
