A00044 - May 2022 Must See TV: PBS: Frontline: Police on Trial

For those who did the homework set forth in the email below ... and for those who can still remember the issues that caused such turmoil in this country only two years ago ... I highly recommend viewing the PBS Frontline program this week.  The title of the episode is "Police on Trial" and it is a follow-up documentary about the Minneapolis Police Department.  https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/police-on-trial/ May is a long month.  Hope it has been a memorable one for all. A00043 - George Floyd Revisited

It has been two years since the death of George Floyd.  In that two year period of time, more information about the Minneapolis Police Department has become available. https://www.forbes.com/sites/joewalsh/2022/04/27/minneapolis-police-engaged-in-years-long-pattern-of-racial-discrimination-post-george-floyd-investigation-claims/?sh=2ebfc0337709 Sadly, most folks probably have little interest in these findings since we have "moved on" to bigger issues such as the War in Ukraine and the latest senseless act of violence in Uvalde, Texas. I fully understand the prominence of these major concerns but I still have equally major concerns about the Minneapolis findings and the findings that have occurred in other cities which demonstrate the long pattern of racial discrimination perpetrated by the police.  These concerns have been heightened by my viewing of a new HBO mini-series entitled "We Own The City"  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Own_This_City which highlights t

A00042 - May 2022 Must See TV: PBS: Before They Take Us Away and Geographies of Kinship

This month there have been two additional powerful programs that I highly recommend for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.  The first is the story about the Japanese Americans who voluntarily evacuated from the West Coast to work as farmworkers in Utah and Colorado instead of being confined in the World War II internment camps.  I had never heard of this side of the story.  This month I did and it is compelling  https://www.pbs.org/video/before-they-take-us-away-hzq9jg/ The second program deals with the mass adoption of Korean children that began after the Korean War.  The emotions attached to this subject are quite deep and should cause us to pause and think about what has been done in the past and what is still being done in other venues today. https://www.pbs.org/video/america-reframed-geographies-of-kinship-trailer/ Thought provoking and compelling. A00041 - Golden Time of Day

I am retired now.  There is no longer a need to commute to anywhere nor to engage in office politics.  These days, one of the highlights is to venture out to my backyard to check on my strawberry plants and to watch the sky turn golden as the sun sets.  In so many ways, these are the golden years, and I live in the Golden State where tomorrow my Golden State Warriors shall resume their quest for the golden trophy.  Life is good ... indeed, it is golden and every day there is a golden time of day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGJXN4vEdXc Peace, Everett Jenkins Fairfield, California May 17, 2022

A00040 - May 2022 Must See TV: PBS: American Masters: Waterman - Duke: Ambassador of Aloha

For the month of May 2022, I encourage everyone to watch the PBS American Masters documentary on the life of Duke Kahanamoku. https://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/waterman-duke-ambassador-of-aloha-stream-documentary/21022/ Although I have been to Hawaii many times, I never knew the full story behind this Hawaiian legend.  This documentary provides his story with a poignancy that at times brought me to tears.  I wish there could be a way to "require" that every person ... and every child ... watch this documentary.  However, with my limited influence all I can do is strongly recommend that the documentary be watched by all and hope that the life messages of the Duke will be absorbed by some. A00039 - Norman Mineta, R.I.P. and the Legacies of the Past

It seems like only yesterday that I posted the email entitled Holocaust Chronicle, but it has been five years, and oh so much has changed.  The situation in Ukraine has highlighted the fact that the atrocities committed during World War II have occurred again ... but, in reality, they never stopped occurring since the war ended some 77 years ago.  With regards to the internment of the Japanese during World War II, former Wyoming Senator Alan Simpson's assessment that such injustice could occur again was spot on.  During this Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, PBS is airing its series on the Asian Americans.  Tonight it aired the episode that chronicles the internment of the Japanese during World War II. The episode concludes by showing former Japanese internees protesting against the immigration compounds in Texas which they view as comparable to the concentration camps they endured during World War II.  Eerily, the protesters and Alan Simpson both appear to be r
